Oyster Shell Recycling

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, The Nature Conservancy and Fisher Recycling have partnered together to offer Charleston-area restaurants the opportunity to be a part of a pilot oyster shell recycling project. Beginning in October, for a nominal fee restaurants can join our program, start recycling oyster shells and make a positive impact on South Carolina's marine habitat.

WHY?
  • Oyster shells are essential for marine habitat restoration.
  • Charleston-area restaurants could provide more than half the shell needed for replanting.
  • Simple & makes a difference in the future of our environment.

HOW?
  • Collect shells in provided bins between October 2009 through May 2010.
  • Sign up for service and schedule pick-up with Fisher Recycling.
  • Ensure only shells are placed in bins - NOT TRASH.
  • Educate wait staff.

COST?
  • Cost is $20/pick up.
  • Includes 2 bins, participation decal for storefront, positive PR through The Nature Conservancy's marketing efforts to promote the program.
